My story
Hi there
Another year, another challenge, and another worthy cause :)
In 2010 Tony and I cycled 200 miles from London to Paris in 3 days. In 2011 we cycled 300 miles from London to Amsterdam & Brussels in 4 days.
In 2013 We've taken the plunge and signed up to cycle 450 miles from Edinburgh to London in 5 days. By far the biggest cycling challenge either of us have ever taken on!
Myself and my friends have raised over £7k for charities through cycling events over the last few years. On top of this, East Midlands Trains (our employer) has supported these charities through a number of special events. In 2011 we ran a special 'Mid-Norfolk Marauder' railtour from St Pancras to Dereham on the Mid-Norfolk Railway, raising a massive £25k for Railway Children. On 3 November 2012 we raised over £37k for Samaritans and Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity by running the 'Worth Valley Wanderer' railtour from St Pancras to Oxenhope on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway (See our pics below).
We have chosen to raise money for Samaritans this year, as we are working jointly on a special project aimed at reducing the number of fatalities affecting the UK rail system. East Midlands Trains alone has had over 84 trains and crew involved in rail fatalities over the last five and a half years; the majority of which have involved people taking their own lives.
The dedicated team at Samaritans that we work with are a fantastic bunch. They have developed and deliver targeted training, and provide train crew the support they often need after being involved in such a traumatic event. This is about us giving something back to them, so they can continue this valuable work. Any support you are able to provide, would be greatly appreciated :)
Donating through Just Giving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
So please dig deep and donate now. Thank you :)
My updates 3
There have been some amazing donations coming in. So many generous people out there, and we are blessed to count them as friends :) As part of our training, we are now committed to cycle Kettering to Derby on 24 May, and are signed up for the Norwich 100 on 1 June. Game on!
Special thanks to Stagecoach Group for the £500 off-line donation, and to 'Across the Divde' who have provided a £63 donation as thanks for us having recruited 8 riders for the event. Both unexpected, but most welcome :)
Great day at St Pancras raising fund yesterday (02/03/13)... raised £352.68 + £91 on-line. A super family day out, with added feelgood factor :)
