Guernsey Marathon · 30 August 2009

The Wessex Neurological Centre serves a population of 3 million throughout central southern England & the Channel Islands. Having successfully raised £80,000 to provide a dedicated 'critical care' ambulance, and £145,000 to fund the creation of a Paediatric Video-Telemetry Suite (used to assess children with severe Epilepsy as to their suitability for life-changing corrective surgery), our latest appeal aims to raise a further £200,000 for our most ambitious project to date - the Fluorescence Enhanced Neurosurgery Appeal. Surgeons at the Centre perform vascular neurosurgery (to repair aneurysms, haemorrhages and the like), on hundreds of patients each year. By equipping one of the Centre's operating theatres with a new, state-of-the-art operating microscope fitted with the FL800 Fluorescence system, most of these patients will benefit. Fluorescence Enhanced Neurosurgery enables surgeons to clearly visualise blood-flow in adjacent brain tissue, reducing the possibility of either a recurrence of the bleed, or of a post-operative stroke. Story

As I’m sure you are all aware, Rupert Hague-Holmes, James Tracey, Ian Smith and Nigel Govett entered and completed a 30 mile run over Dartmoor called “Run for Charlotte” on 18th July 2009. Rupert’s son, William, also completed 3 miles of the run. Further fund raising events have been planned over the coming months, for example “Party for Charlotte”. Further information can be found at www.runforcharlotte.com.

The first Guernsey Marathon in 17 years will be held on Sunday 30th August 2009. The race will last for a gruelling 26 miles 385 yards along Guernsey’s beautiful hilly roads, coastal routes and lanes. Please go to http://www.guernseymarathon.gg/ for more information.

I have agreed to run the marathon in aid of Smile4Rich (http://www.smile4rich.co.uk/), the charity associated with The Wessex Neurological Centre, as a contribution to the Charlotte fundraising appeal.
