100km in 24Hours! It took21!!

Decent shoes and socks a must! As it poured with rain in the second half several changes were required plus liberal dousing with footpowder!

I signed up for and have now completed  the "Belgium Death March" also known as the "Dodentocht" which is a circular route of 100km starting in Bornem just south of Antwerp in Belgium. Start time is 21:00hrs on 12th August and the finish must be reached no later than 21:00hrs on 13th August. The event has been held annually for the last 42 years, successful completion earns the lucky participant a medal with a skull and crossbones embossed on it, a piece of paper confirming times through the various checkpoints en route and a pineapple which turned out to be a gladioli! A greater reward for me is to raise a significant amount of money for "Care for Casualties", The Rifles Charity.

Having served with The Royal Green Jackets between 1982-1994, my aim is to raise monies for the soldiers and their families of our descendent regiment The Rifles, who along with the rest of the British Forces are engaged in the most intense military operations since World War 2. Since their formation, The Rifles have suffered more fatalities than any other regiment.

"Care for Casualties" provides first line support for soldiers who have been injured, many with life changing injuries such as loss of limbs, sight or hearing. It also supports their families and the families of those killed. The News today (6th June) reports another rifleman killed in Afghanistan, the demands on the charity increases  and funds needed to meet those demands and provide the essential support.
