Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Some of you may be aware my step dad, Frank, has been fighting cancer for the last 3 years. He was originally diagnosed with lung cancer, as a non-smoker, which has progressed into his bones and spine.

Whilst chemo and radiotherapy have had an affect, they have not contained the cancer, and it continues to progress, having a negative impact on Franks quality of life.

He is almost 100% wheelchair bound, and at times the pain has been unbearable. The support however given to Frank through Barnsley Hospice has been fantastic. He has had 3 stays in the hospice, averaging around 4 nights per visit. They are able to attend to his requirements, review his medication and adjust where necessary, and provide alternative treatments when required.

Their attitude and approach has relaxed Frank greatly, and he feels at ease staying at the hospice, away from the stigma often attached with them. He also attends regularly once a week where they can review his situation and ensure he is getting the best support required.

This has not only been a Godsend for Frank, but also for my Mum who is pretty much Frank's full time carer. The support she has received, and also the opportunity to empathise with others has been a massive benefit to her as well.

It is following this support that Frank asked Jordan, Franks Grandson, and I, if we could undertake some type of fundraising to thank the hospice for everything they have done for them. We decided, following Frank's love of the Dales, to undertake the Yorkshire 3 Peaks. We've enrolled my wife, Maria, brother-in-law Gary and sister-in-law Carol and her partner Martin to create a group event, with the date set for Sunday 31st July. The 3 Peaks takes in the summits of Pen-y-ghent (694 metres - 2,276 feet), Whernside (736 metres - 2,415 feet) and Ingleborough (723 metres  2,372 feet) all in one circular route. There is no set starting point, but the vast majority of walkers start at Horton-in-Ribblesdale, taking in the summits in the order shown above.
The walk is 24.5 miles (39.2km) long and takes in over 5,000 feet (1,600 metres) of climbing. The walking is over a variety of terrains, and even though the paths have been improved immensely over recent years, certain sections can still be very boggy and energy sapping.

We would all appreciate your support in completing this event, in under the 12 hour guideline set, and help us to thank Barnsley Hopice for everything they have done for us. Frank continues to be supported by the Hospice, and he wants to ensure others receive the same support he has done in such difficult times. It costs £4,791 each and every day to run the Hospice, but the benefit is invaluable.
