ING New York Marathon 2007 · 4 November 2007 ·

Get Kids Going! helps disabled children take part in sport by providing specialist sports wheelchairs, sports grants and year round support. They can then compete in marathons, triathlons, tennis, athletics, skiing, rugby, basketball etc. With your help, many could become Paralympic champions and world record holders.

Story

Hi all, thanks to everyone for sponsoring me. I managed to limp round in 4hrs 54mins, and I am suffering now.  Did halfway in around 2 hrs so was on target for 4hrs 30mins, but the knees gave in late on which slowed me down.

Anyway, a great experience...which i wont be repeating too soon :-)

I managed to collect just under £2000 in sponsorship, so i have made up the difference myself so it is a nice round figure (bit like myself).

Thanks again for you generosity, i'm sure it will be well received by Get Kids Going.

cheers

Hi, thanks for taking the time to visit this page and hopefully sponsor me for the NY marathon.

A lot of people assume that because i was once a soldier in the Parachute Regiment, that i should still be fit enough to complete challenges such as running a marathon. Well, i'm not. I suffer from Osteoarthritis in both knees and i have a bad back from a parachuting accident, which actually classes me as disabled. Also, i have been a civilian for about 10 years with absolutely no need to run more than a few miles at a time.  So far, the training has been hard, but i have lost 2 stone in weight and i have learnt a lot about pain management.

So running a marathon is a real challenge to me, but when i see people completing marathons in wheelchairs, or with false limbs, or with any other disability that is far worse than mine, it makes you feel that a bit of pain is no excuse to not try.

I have chosen this charity for a number of reasons. Mostly because there are kids out there who won't ever get the chance to do the physically challenging things i have done in my life, but could have the chance to get involved with sports and fitness through the work of this charity, and perhaps even compete at a high level.

This is a great cause so please give what you can, because every penny counts. The more the better, but £1 is better than nothing at all (for my American friends, $2 at the current exchange rates :-) ).

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Get Kids Going! will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please sponsor me now!

Many thanks for your support.

Dave
