Story
I am amazed and delighted to say that over 100 friends and family are taking part in Team Traithlon on Saturday 2 September 2017.
0730 - 0900 am - 32 lengths of Bucksburn Swimming Pool.
1030 am onwards - 5km run and 20km bike ride.
My connection with Type 1 is my son Adam (9).
In the time since he has been diagnosed I have been surprised by how many people I know that are affected by diabetes
Adam was diagnosed on 1 September 2013
I was motivated to raise money for JDRF after being inspired
by how Adam has dealt with his daily challenges. He does not moan or complain about things, he just gets on with it. That has inspired
me to try and be more thankful for my fantastic family who are the most
important thing in my life.
Adam has been on the pump since 26 February 2014. We have
seen a real improvement with our control of diabetes and love the fact we can download information to our laptop to review results. He only told me recently that he was really scared the first week he was in hospital and hated injections. That was tough to hear but the pump has taken away his 4 daily injections.
Adam wakes up and is checked straight away to see what his
blood glucose reading is. He then has breakfast and is given insulin through the pump. He goes to Elrick Primary School and is given
fantastic support by his friends, their parents and the staff at the school.
I think they would agree that Adam is virtually in control of his pump
by himself now but is supervised in everything he does. The school have been amazing and taken a huge burden from me and my wife as knowing he is safe and cared for gives us great peace of mind.
Adam is extremely active which also poses a challenge as
getting his readings in range and judging his temporary basal (reduction in insulin) is difficult. These things are always at the forefront of our minds and we are always supported by the specialist diabetes hospital staff and grandparents.
I decided to do something to raise funds as being a parent and
watching what Adam does makes me feel pretty helpless sometimes. I wanted to take on something that could involve Adam. I didn't expect the response we have had !!!!
The day is to raise money for JDRF but please be aware I fully acknowledge and respect the fact we are all fighting our own personal battles.
The day Adam was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes felt like the end of the world. Since that day Adam and my family have been hugely impressed by the support, expertise and knowledge that is readily available to us.
I am aware that we are all fighting our own personal battles and the fact over 100 people will come and be part of the day is extremely humbling.
I will continue to be involved with JDRF to help them find a cure for
diabetes.
