Update 31-Oct-2011: Yesterday I did it, much to my own surprise; I completed the 10mile Great South Run in just 1hour 42 minutes and 24 seconds! Now I'm just sore. Thank you to everyone who supported me.
I'm raising money for a very worthy cause that I hope you'll want to support. Canine Partners is a progressive charity that aims to transform the lives of people with disabilities, enabling them to live more independently by partnering them with highly trained assistance dogs. As a registered charity they receive no government funding and are wholly dependent on public donations and legacies.
Canine Partners train dogs to help transform the lives of people with physical disabilities, most of whom are wheelchair users. They train dogs to respond to a wide range of commands, enabling them to carry out a vast number of tasks for their Partner.
As one of the Partners myself I've discovered for myself just what a difference an assistance dog can make to my own independence and wellbeing. Zack, my dog, is a fantastic help to me opening doors, picking things up for me and bringing me things I can't reach. He's great company and helps to keep my mental health on the straight and narrow too.
As a Trustee of the charity too, I am constantly reminded of the great work being undertaken and the difference each dog makes to its partner's life. Some of the applicants who have applied to Canine Partners have lived for many months and even years without leaving their home and for them a Canine Partner is truly a life enhancing experience - literally opening doors enabling them to enjoy a greater independence. Others have an active life but need some additional help in order to enable them to continue living life the way they want to.
