Virgin London Marathon 2012 · 22 April 2012 ·

Since our formation in 2001 when the charity supported a single school, we now support 6 schools (and others where possible) all of which have been built by the charity. The charity is run by unpaid trustees and we are funded entirely by donations, fundraising activities and unpaid volunteers.

Story

This year I have qualified for a place in the Virgin London Marathon and I have decided to raise money for the charity that is so close to my heart, The Gambian Schools Trust. The money that I raised for them, when I did my first ever marathon back in Edinburgh in 2010, went towards the cost of rebuilding Naata Nursery on a new site and last year I was fortunate enough to go out to The Gambia and actually see the school that was built. The wonderful thing about this was that I could physically see where my sponsorship money had been spent and could also see for myself just how grateful the head teacher of the school, Mr. Jallow, was for this help in ensuring the future for his school and his pupils (see photos)

This year The Gambian Schools Trust committee members have no specific building project planned that they are raising funds for but they are trying to raise money to enable them to keep supplying school lunches to all of their pupils. It costs approximately £1 per month for one child’s school lunch and, as there are just under 400 children enrolled at their nursery schools, they need £400 per month to pay for them. So, their target this year is to raise a minimum of a year’s funding which comes in at approximately £4800, so please help me to help them achieve this target so that these children can concentrate on their education rather than their hunger.

For more information on the charity (registered charity number 1093083) please see their website www.gambianschools.org

Thank you.
