The Ridgeway 40 is an organised walk that takes place each year, the challenge being to walk 40 miles in a day. This ancient route has been travelled for thousands of years, no doubt by many people fleeing conflict, which is especially poignant these days. As a result, I'm walking only to honour the memory of my dear friend, Andy, but also to support the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. Heavy fighting, shelling and air strikes across Ukraine have had devastating consequences. Already, over two million people, mostly women, children and the elderly, have fled their homes to escape the intense conflict, leaving behind loved ones, losing livelihoods and belongings. All are in need of shelter, food, and water; essential services like healthcare have been hit; temperatures have dropped below zero.
