Update 18.5.2014

Hi Everyone,

What a day!

Massive turnout for the race on probably the hottest day of the year so far – 25 degrees!

I completed the run – but only just.

I have had a calf strain for the past three weeks and not been able to train as I would have liked. The calf tightened up after 1K but felt ok until it cramped altogether at 7.5 K.  I was hobbling for the last part of the race and finished on 70mins and 50 secs!, my slowest so far.

However, the important result today is that we have so far raised just over £500 for The Christie and Bolton Hospice, which is wonderful. This money will be able to help people in the future who unfortunately need to use their services.

A big thanks you to Louise, my Fiancée, who has helped with massages, supporting me on the day and raising money. Thanks to Edna for her support on the day and a massive thank you to all the people that have donated money to two very worthwhile causes to help other people in the future.

I know that my family members who have died from cancer would all thank you for your contributions and I know that Anne Devany who passed away only last month would be chuffed to bits with what has been raised in her memory.

Thank you so much.

David.

________________________________________________________

My name is David Haworth and four members of my family have now died from cancer.

I am trying to raise money for The Christie and Bolton Hospice, two very worthy causes who do a fantastic job for people with cancer and only get part of their funding from the NHS.

My Son, Steven was diagnosed with Cancer at the end of November 2010 at the age of 29. The type of Cancer was Small Cell Cancer, a very aggressive type.

He needed two operations at Hope Hospital, Salford on his spine and neck and then he went to The Christie for his Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy sessions.

The Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy didn't work and he was transferred to Bolton Hospice at the start of February. He had been kept informed at each stage and he knew the prognosis and how quickly things were moving on.

Steven died during the afternoon of his 30th birthday, on the 13th February 2011.

I was very impressed with the standard of care that Steven, my Son, received at The Christie and at Bolton Hospice. The staff and volunteers were very professional, caring and have a very difficult job to do.

Very recently my Fiancé’s Mother, Anne Devany, has died from lung cancer on the 8th April 2014 at the age of 70.

She had been diagnosed with cancer just over two years ago and was only given about 3 to 6 months to live. She managed to survive for a further 18 months. She was able to stay at home with her family right to the end and was extremely brave throughout her illness. She will be sadly missed by all her family and friends.

My Aunt, May, died from Leukemia in 2103 after a long illness.

My Sister in Law, Lynne died from cancer in 2010 after a courageous three year battle.

This is the third time that I will be taking part in the BUPA 10K Manchester run, which this year is on the 18th May 2014. I was due to run the race last year but had to withdraw at the last minute due to a chest infection. The money that was pledged last year did go through to The Christie and hopefully will have helped in the fight against cancer.

I am very keen to raise as much as I can for The Christie and the Bolton Hospice, who rely heavily on donations to keep their services going.

It would be great if you could help me, by donating whatever you can, to make sure that these services are still available to other people in the future

Thank You.

David.
