UPDATE - ARRIVED JOHN O'GROATS 18 SEPT 2009 - 10days 4 hrs - 1002 miles.

Thanks again to all of my sponsors.

On 9 September 2009 I am setting off on a personal challenge cycling from Land’s End to John O’ Groats (LEJOG) with a target time of 10 days – an average of 100 miles a day on the quieter roads that I will be choosing for my route. I am hoping that my guaranteed pain and suffering will win your contributions to the charity Headway  - the brain injury association. I have chosen this charity because my good friend and cycling companion Ken Middlemiss suffered serious brain damage in a cycling accident in Plymouth in March 2009 and he is still unable to speak, walk or eat.  He is making incremental improvements but progress is slow, and like many victims and their families, Ken and his family will need the support of Headway in Plymouth over the ensuing months or longer.

Ken has been at the centre of cycling activity in my home village of Yealmpton, Devon, for several years, organising many village rides for cyclists of all ages and abilities, supporting cycling-related projects in the area and teaching cycle safety to children and adults. He was also the founder of our own informal cycling club – the Yealm Rouleurs and is a member of the YOGI cycling club in Plymouth. Ken is a very accomplished long-distance cyclist having completed countless events in France to gold standard including the infamous 1200km Paris-Brest-Paris ride. He has also inspired several ex-squash players and runners like myself to return to cycling and progress to 100-mile events in the mountains of France and Italy.

Ken was my inspiration to undertake this challenge and he was planning to ride the first few days of my LeJOG ride to give me company and support, but sadly he will not be able to join me. This will be my longest cycling challenge by far, and the first back to back 100-milers I will have done – let alone 10 in a row!

Headway is a charity set up to give help and support to people affected by brain injury, working at a national and local level. More information can be found at http://www.headway.org.uk. Any sponsorship money I collect will be directed to the Plymouth Branch.

I am being joined in this challenge by an old friend Nick Bradley, who is collecting for another cause.
