Story

My father will often remark as we sit on the beach looking overlooking the Carrick Rhodes how lucky we are and I think he is gently reminding me of my good fortune.

I have a wonderful life, living in Cornwall surrounded by family friends children & dogs galore and if I could tap dance to work in the mornings I would.

I played Rugby first when I was seven years old on a freezing pitch in the north of Scotland, it has always been a passion and now as I am too old to play, I coach amongst others both my eldest son Jack and littlest son Oliver at their local rugby club in Falmouth.

It is of course a game with risks there are occasionally injuries and some of those are life changing.

This Saturday was one of those experiences I dread, I had been watching Jack in the under 14's match and his friend Joe was tackled dangerously and landed heavily on his neck, the medics rushed on together with his father, a doctor to assist, he was speedily braced, stretchered and rushed to hospital in an ambulance, all in the space of 30 minutes or so.

It is those moments as a parent you dread, I had been in the same postion with Jack a year earlier and you really get into hoping and praying, I think in my case I sold my soul a few times, offered a series of silent prayers to take up the priesthood and at the very least go to church three times on Sunday.

Jack survived intact and so did Joe wich was the good news. When we arrived home however we heard the bad news, which was simply that an older boy had sustained a very serious neck injury the extent of which we do not know. It will go some way to explain why I support what Regain do, and  the life changing events can happen to any of us.

I've  been lucky enough to go on two cycle rides before which are a challenge for all who take part, the wheelchair entrants are remarkable. On each ride you are taken out of your comfort zone with a group of people of differing ages and abilities to complete a course which can in itself be life changing for each individual. The experience changed my perspective and In truth I am happy to recognise my good fortune even without the benefit of my father's gentle reminders.

All of you who read this will know me well, I was pursaded to go on this ride last week because I can and to the extent you are in the tap dancing variety please re-distribute a little of you hard earned wealth to this charity. It is a good one for all the reasons above and many more besides. The target is above and I have kicked off with the intial contribution we can hopefully reach the total with your assistance.
