Story

Hello,

As Part of WWFs Staff Fundraising Initiative some of the Resources Team have joined together to Cycle from Panda House in Godalming to Brighton on the 10th Sept in aid of the Western Gray Whales.

I'm going to do this on my single speed for giggles, (that's about 45 miles on and offroad) so sponsor me please; even if it's just a quid every little bit is good.

The Western Gray Whale teeters on the brink of extinction, with just 130-150 animals remaining, making it one of the world’s most threatened whale species. They feast throughout the summer in the waters off Sakhalin Island in eastern Russia, which coincides with one of the world’s largest offshore oil and gas developments. These developments cause particular problems for whales, as they are very noisy, particularly in the exploration phase when huge blasts of sound are projected into the ocean floor to detect any oil deposits. Such noise can interfere with whale communication; reducing their ability to hear natural sounds that help them feed and navigate which can cause them to abandon their feeding grounds altogether

Plans have just been announced to build another major oil platform near these crucial feeding grounds. This third platform will increase acoustic pollution, heighten the risk of a devastating oil spill and increase the chances of fatal ship strikes. The loss of even a few breeding females could mean the end of the population of western gray whales.

Please sponsor us today and help us to work with and ensure oil and gas companies adopt and effectively implement strong management plans to minimise their impact on the western gray whales.
