I have been a keen outdoor person since my teenage years, initially rock climbing in the Lakes and subsequently hill walking in many mountain areas around UK and abroad.  Whilst at college (in Ambleside) I spent a short time working with the Langdale MRT (as it was then) and gained an early appreciation of the work they do.  More recently on a walking weekend, whilst descending the Corridor route from Scafell Pike I inadvertently stepped off the path and went for a tumble down the hillside (this was caused by making eye contact with a young lady who had made way for me!).  Suffering only damaged pride, this incident brought home to me how even experienced and well equipped people can easily suffer an accident in the hills.  Even a trivial incident can have serious consequences and the existence of the mountain rescue service is essential in saving many lives a year.  They only exist because of the voluntary contributions made by individuals such as YOU......
