Story

Gerard and me succesfully completed our Charity Walk challenge, on schedule, on saturday afternoon 17th July. A longer walk than anticipated by a few miles, we accumulated a fair share of blisters and suffered at the hands of the weather by getting well and truly soaked on a couple of occasions. We are very pleased and proud to have met our challenge, and this is put into perspective by the incredibly generous support fom all of you who have sponsored us. To raise the amount that has been donated was way beyond our most optimistic hopes. Our most sincere thanks to all of you who sponsored us.

For the past 13 years I have had numerous sight threatening eye conditions, including cataracts, detached retina, vitreous detachment and for the past 5 years, Glaucoma. Thanks to the skills, knowledge and experience of my Consultant Surgeon, Wendy Franks, and her team at Moorfields, I am still able to see well enough to drive, although following the flight and location of a golf ball is somewhat dependent on those unfortunate enough to play the game with me.

Extremely valuable research is carried out at Moorfields to help save the sight of many thousands of people of all ages,  and from many parts of the world, for which I shall be eternally grateful.

Having benefited so significantly and acknowledging that I will need regular checks and treatment for the Glaucoma for the rest of my life, I feel that I must contribute in some way to the Moorfields research programmes. Specifically, to help raise funds for equipment currently needed to enable further stem cell research hopefully to prevent blindness and ultimately to restore vision for eye diseases that are currently intractable, including age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and corneal scarring.

My choice is to take on a 120 Kilometre walk, together with my son Gerard, from Watford to Leamington Spa.The walk will require a 30 kilometre walk each day for 4 days, from 14th to 17th July 2010.  Of course, if anyone would like to join us for part of the walk, you would be very welcome. I will post details of the stages of the walk in due course.
