I have taken on the challenge of completing the Deloitte Ride Across Britain.  This challenge, which starts on 12 June 2010, involves a 1,000-mile mass cycle down the length of Great Britain, from John O'Groats to Land's End, with 600 cyclists (including James Cracknell and Rebecca Romero) covering more than 110 miles per day.  I have been training hard for the last six months, so much so that it has taken over family life at weekends and Candice, my wife for those that don't know her, has been very supportive – the garden and golf have also suffered! 

 

A close friend, Jeremy Cary, got me involved in cycling when I needed to get fit five years ago and "encouraged" me to do the Tanzania ride with me last year.  He was due to do the RAB ride this year with me but suffered a prolapsed disc recently and has had to defer his ride till next year.  He was going to raise money for Rainbow Trust (http://www.rainbowtrust.org.uk/).  I thought the charity should not lose out due to his misfortune so have included Rainbow Trust as a charity I would like to support.

 

Rainbow Trust provides emotional and practical support to families who have a child with a life threatening or terminal illness. Rainbow Trust's Family Support Workers join the family in their own home and are there to provide practical support. We are contactable 24 hours a day for families in crisis from diagnosis, through treatment and even after bereavement.  Rainbow relies almost entirely on voluntary donations and through the generosity of our supporters we are able to help around 1,000 families a year.
