This coming April I will be putting myself to the test and going outside my comfort zone by taking part in an outdoor Challenge. This will involve myself and approx. 40 of my work colleagues at Rigby Group undertaking a 36km cycle and 30km trek, over the course of 2 days, in the Lake District.
Those who have been to the Lake District will know this will be no walk in the park. Home to England's highest peaks, it is an area of outstanding natural beauty, with some very challenging terrain. I've been quite sedentary behind a keyboard for the past 10 or so years, so this is going to be tough, and will most likely see me suffer aches, pains and lots of blisters.
As my age approaches the half century mark, I realise I need to take more care and start looking after myself - maintaining a healthier lifestyle and being more active. This challenge is great way to push myself to get more fit, push my own boundaries and try to give something back at the same time.
The charity I am doing this for, Place2Be, is a wonderful children’s mental health charity. It supports 300 primary and secondary schools across the UK, together with training mental health counsellors. During 2018 they have supported 45,000 children dealing with many complex issues surrounding bullying, self-harm, poverty & deprivation, emotional and physical abuse and supported children living in complex home situations caring for parents or dealing with alcohol and drug abuse.
It’s a charity supported by the kind generosity of the Duchess of Cambridge and one with whom Rigby Group has a close relationship with.
As Rigby Group's IT Manager, I'm not going to be able to find any technological or automated solution to get me through this. This will be entirely under my own steam and it's a challenge I am very much looking forward to. Any donation you can make will go straight to the charity and be very much appreciated.
