The Fountain Centre supports people affected by cancer in the Royal Surrey Cancer Centre community. Based in the hospital but funded entirely by donations, we provide vital emotional, psychological, and practical support from diagnosis through treatment and beyond—for patients and their families.

Story

We did it!

We reached our goal of walking the last 100 miles of the Way of St James, the ancient pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela. It was sometimes demanding, often tiring, but always a wonderful experience. Many pilgrim tales, laughter and kindnesses were exchanged along the way. The spectacular scenery made for challenging walking on occasion, but the whole journey was enjoyable in the company of good friends. Thanks to your fantastic generosity, I’ve have reached and exceeded my fundraising target of £2,000. It's not too late to sponsor me - let's see how much more we can raise for this great cause!

Buen Camino!

The Challenge

To walk the last 100 miles of the Way of St James, the ancient pilgrim route from France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The trek should (hopefully!) take 8 days. The route follows mountain paths, winding cart tracks, gently rolling hills and finishes at the spectacular Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

The Cause

The Fountain Centre is part of St Luke’s Cancer Centre at the Royal Surrey County Hospital. The drop-in centre’s mission is to help those touched by cancer, both patients and carers, to regain control over their lives. The integrated care offered involves complementary therapies in conjunction with conventional medicine. The work of the Fountain Centre has the full backing of the hospital’s oncology team.

Many therapies are offered in the calm and friendly atmosphere of the centre including massage, reflexology, shiatsu, acupuncture and reiki. A team of trained counsellors is on hand to work with patients and carers. The Fountain Centre has an extensive lending library and can provide details of local self-help groups as well as national and international cancer organisations.

Perhaps just as important as the therapies and support, the Fountain Centre offers a place simply to sit quietly in a comfortable, relaxed environment. Patients can pop in with their family and friends, have a cup of tea or coffee and escape the hustle and bustle of the hospital.

The Reason

I was diagnosed with cancer in February 2008 and have had personal experience of just how valuable the Fountain Centre can be. This trek is my way of saying thank you for the support and help the Fountain Centre gave me and my family at the most challenging time of my life. I am now able to give something back and I know that with your support I will reach my twin targets of completing the trek and raising £2,000, so please sponsor me now!

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me. The Fountain Centre gets your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid is reclaimed on your donation.

Thank you
