MELANOMA IS TRULY ONE OF THE 'DISEASES OF THE 21st CENTURY'
Melanoma is one of the 'Diseases of the 21st Century'. 1 in 1,500 suffered from melanoma in the 1930s. Now the incidence is 1 in 50. The bad news is that it's getting worse, with the incidence doubling in the past ten years. Worse still, unless it's diagnosed early, there is a very high death rate: and it's the most common cancer amongst young people.
If everybody who knows somebody who's suffered from melanoma was to donate £1 every year to Myfanwy's Charity, we'd get £60 million every year: because almost everybody in Britain knows somebody who's suffered from melanoma. Melanoma is potentially one of the world's major killers.
Recently a very close friend of mine became ill because of this terrible version of cancer.
Having then researched it more, I found that it can be treated early, but the signs are often overlooked or dismissed by both the potential sufferer and the medical profession. I would urge everyone to understand the sign, check themselves and their loved ones, and go to the doctors if at all concerned. Also, don’t take no for an answer, if at first dismissed, keep fighting, as it can be overlooked or not addressed before it is to late.
I have decided to do something positive to help raise money for both awareness and treatment of this terrible disease.
Therefore, myself and 10 friends Sam, Betty, Sarah, Dawn, Andrea, Catherine, Hannah, Lucy, Sandra and Penny, are planning to cycle Bath to Aldermaston over the weekend of May 6-8th.
The distance is approximately 75 miles.
I am doing this trip to raise funds for the Myfanwy Townsend Melanoma Research Fund. (Please go to www.melanoma-fund.co.uk to understand and read more about the charity)
If you would be so kind as to sponsor me for as little or as much as you can, we can help to understand and fight this increasingly common form of cancer.
