My mum has severe osteoporosis, resulting in a spinal collapse, a curvature of the spine and limited mobility. Mum’s birthday is the 25 April, the same day as the London Marathon in 2010 and she is passionate that “no-one should end up like her”, so I am taking on the challenge of the London Marathon on Mum’s birthday, raising monies for an organisation that has and will continue to research and contribute to advances in the prevention of Osteoporosis for all.
I’m not the fittest of people, my bone age is approx 78-80 years and at my last scan I shrunk another cm, so I hope you understand what a momentous challenge this is for me and how close the charity is to my heart.
Osteoporosis literally means ‘porous bones’ and is often referred to as ‘fragile bone disease’
People are often unaware that they have fragile bones until the time of a first fracture. One in two women and one in five men over the age of 50 in the will fracture a bone, mainly as a result of osteoporosis. The cause of the disease is still not fully understood, but research continues
