Story

Denzil, Lianne, Martin and Lynne are walking the 192 mile Coast-to-Coast, from St Bees to Robin Hood's Bay to raise money for the lung transplant unit at Papworth hospital.

For years, Den & Lianne's brother-in-law David was considered to have acute and debilitating asthma. He was eventually correctly diagnosed as having emphysema. The diagnosis came too late, however, and his lungs were already riddled with holes.

Everyone knew that Christmas 2009 would be his last. He could no longer stand unsupported, let alone walk; and had given up any pretence of being able to help around the house. He had an oxygen machine by his chair and a portable set should he go anywhere. Climbing a flight of stairs was simply out of the question. His mind was in good nick, and the outdoor spirit was alive and well, but his failing lungs were killing him in his early 50s.

Then Papworth Hospital rang on Boxing Day evening - and within 24 hours he had a new pair of lungs. Three weeks later he was home. Christmas 2010 and he is back on stage as a Pantomime Dame and running up flights of stairs - just because he can.

We'll be eternally grateful to Papworth. We will be eternally grateful to the donor and to their family - and perhaps doing something to help Papworth might be the best way open to us to express that gratitude to them.

We want to give something back by walking 192 miles from St Bees to Robin Hood's Bay - Wainwrights classic Coast-to-Coast - in July.
