Pilgrims Hospices is a charity providing palliative care, free of charge, to people in east Kent. For people with a range of life-limiting illnesses, specialist services are provided from our three hospices in Canterbury, Ashford and Thanet, in patients' homes and via community programmes.

Story

My Dad, Derek Pullen, was born in Folkestone in December 1946. He was the youngest of 5 brothers. He moved to Dover after meeting and marrying my Mum, Vera, in 1969. He had 2 children, myself and my sister in the 1970's.

Early in his working life he was a plumber where he came into contact with asbestos.

In 2010 he was diagnosed with Mesothelioma, which is cancer that is directly associated with prolonged exposure to asbestos. He required regular trips to William Harvey Hospital for treatment and was helped throughout this time by the great people at the Pilgrim's Hospice.

He took a turn for the worse and spent a few weeks at William Harvey before they allowed him to be cared for at home. Sadly on 21st November 2011 he passed away peacefully in bed.

The Pilgrims Hospice have been of invaluable assistance to my Dad and family during his illness.

On the one year anniversary of Dad's passing I am going to walk the 18 miles between the Ashford and Canterbury branches of Pilgrims Hospice along the Stour Valley. Anything you can give to support me in this venture will be highly appreciated as this is a fantasic cause.
