Hi-
I am going to Tanzania in a few weeks to climb 19000ft to the summit of Kilimanjaro. We hope to reach the summit on 28th November and are doing the climb over 7 days. Myself, Andrew and Denise have been training hard and cant wait to get going. The only thing that will get us to the top will be to be doing this for something so we each have a personal reason. Here is mine:
Mitocondrial conditions are rare and pretty under-researched. People who have them may lead a normal life until symptoms develop. Then life can change dramatically. These conditions affect the person at the cell level and there is no known cure, people can develop multiple serious problems and until research provides more answers, prognosis is poor.
Having watched my oldest friend fight her battle for years now, her bravery is my inspiration to do something that sometimes seems impossible. I want to get the the summit and raise as much money for research into these conditions as I can. Research is expensive but the only way forward given how complicated mitocondrial conditions are. Anything you can give will go straight to the Newcastle Hospital research centre in England. Obviously, I am covering all trip expenses myself.
