Age UK Rotherham · 22 May 2012

Our aim is to help Rotherham people maintain their independence and quality of life as they get older. We also aim to give older people the opportunity to take part in activities that will help them to stay healthy and active, maintain social contacts and mix with people from different generations.

Story

My name is Di Hollingsworth and I am committed to supporting the Rotherham Less Lonely Campaign through Age UK Rotherham to prevent the lonliness and isolation suffered by too many older people across the country but particularly here in Rotherham. Last year I jumped from a plane and this year I have decided to try and stay in the air a little longer by flying a microlight..

By sponsoring me you will be helping to provide regular companionship for  lonely older people, enable isolated people to get out for an hour from their four walls and bring some sunshine into lonely older peoples lives.

'Imagine a day when you didn’t see anyone, when no one called in, no one phoned, or e mailed or texted or tweeted or face-booked you… when you had no contact with anyone else from getting up to going to bed. Now imagine that the next day was the same, and the next and the next….

Mary doesn’t need to imagine, this is how it is every day of her life…..’

Around 4, 000 older people in Rotherham feel lonely all day, every single day of their lives. On top of this another 13, 000 will feel lonely quite a bit of the time each week. Many older people receive less than one visit per week from a friend or family member. Many are also unable to get out and about to see other people as much as they would like because of health and mobility problems.

Loneliness ruins older people’s quality of life, it affects their health and leaves them feeling isolated, depressed and unable to cope with living independently.

“ I feel lonely and need someone to talk to, I am just sat thinking. I like company. I am not in great health but want to do something to get me out of this monotonous life. It affects me mentally, that I am not doing anything. It’s like being in prison to me"

Mary, aged 82
