Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page for Dreamflight.
As you can see from the title, I am going to shave my hair for this brilliant charity www.dreamflight.org and I am planning for this to be done by my daughter and videoed by my son mid August 2012 (date to be notified).
Apart from suffering from Lupus, earlier this year I was diagnosed with B12 deficiency (Pernicious Anaemia) and had been started on an intensive course of injections which totalled six over a ten day period to bring my B12 back to (or nearer) to normal levels. I now have to have a B12 injection every three months for the rest of my life. Leading up to that diagnosis, my hair started taking on drastic changes, very noticeable changes.
As you can see from the photos, it went from being quite lengthy and very healthy to short, unmanageable, very very grey (I had some grey, but this was like overnight) and breaking to the point where it was patchy in places, thin and very coarse feeling. It has continued along this line and it was really getting me down and so to illeviate my stress, I decided to get a wig that made me feel better.
Since February this year, I have been wearing the wig and my own hair has continued to deteriorate and so to that end, I decided to shave it, hopefully giving it a chance to rejuvenate, but just in case it does not, I did not want to dwell on the fact and so decided to do it for Dreamflight and that way, I would know that shaving it off would benefit some very deserving children and that would make me smile forever.
If you take a look on the Dreamflight website you will see that this charity has been running since 1987 and is funded solely by voluntary contributions. 'In 2008, 8 of the returning Paralympians from Beijing, many of them medal-winning, had been Dreamflight children citing the trip as a turning point for them' - I wonder how many of these fantastic individuals will be winning medals this year on home turf?
Here are some of the ways your donation will help Dreamflight:
- £6.50 pays for a child's Dreamflight rucksack
- £24 buys ice cream and popcorn for a child for the entire trip
- £68 purchases the medical equipment for 1 child
- £85 buys a transit seat, used for transferring children to and from their wheelchairs and on to rides
- £140 pays for a child to swim with dolphins at Discovery Cove
- £285 pays for a child's accommodation and half board in Orlando
- £3000 funds the total holiday for one child
- Also added to this cost is the Boeing 747 which costs over £320,000
So you can see that a lot of fundraising is needed to keep this charity running this fantastic once a year trip.
I hope you are inspired by some of the stories that you read on the website as I was and knowing that every penny goes towards a very good cause must be a dose of good vibe for yourself.
So please dig deep and donate now.
I thank you so much :)
