Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In July this year we will be embarking on a challenging 5 ½ day trek across wild and remote parts of Iceland, covering around 80 km by the end of the hike. We will encounter a variety of terrain on our way – from the active volcanic area of Mt Hekla, solidified lava flow areas, geothermal areas with steaming vents and hot springs, and the occasional snowfield crossing along with many steep climbs and descents and the occasional icy river crossing thrown in. At the end of each days hiking we will be rough camping in 2-man tents with very basic 'creature comforts'. We will be carrying our day necessities (water, sun lotions, waterproof clothing, camera etc) in our rucksacks, our night bags containing our clothes, washing gear etc is carried from one camp to the next by the support vehicles.
Although we know it will be very challenging, we are very excited to be able to take part. To take part in the trek we need to raise a minimum of £6200 (£3100 each), this we aim to achieve by the various fundraising activities we organise. These take the form of fun quiz nights, car treasure hunts, coffee mornings, collections from local supermarkets, race nights, all of which are very successful. We think that the hardest part to these challenges is raising the necessary funds to enable us to take part in the various hiking adventures.
At present we are about 7 weeks into our training, we follow an excellent training guide provided by Macmillan Cancer Support which helps us greatly. Being owners of 2 energetic dogs, walking/hiking is never a problem but living here in the fens we don't come across many hills which would boost our training, for these we have spent some time in the Lake District, we will no doubt have to spend some time in the gym!
Over the last 15 years we have taken part in a number of hiking challenges (Iceland will be Pete's 8th and my 5th) among them are treks in the Sahara Desert, Great Wall of China, and Nepal. All of these have been in support of Macmillan Cancer Support, a charity we are dedicated to having both lost someone close to cancer – myself, my first husband and Pete, a good friend. We all know somebody who has been affected by cancer and if we can help just one person through our efforts then it will have been well worth it.
