My story
"WOMEN AREN'T THE PROBLEM. THEY'RE THE SOLUTION...ALONG WITH MEN" (Half the Sky)
Over a billion people worldwide live on a dollar a day or less — and women make up a majority of the world’s poorest citizens. Women face unique economic barriers in developing countries, such as unequal property rights, low wages, bad working conditions, and lack of access to credit.
When women are poor, families and communities cannot be strong. Women living in poverty face greater challenges in earning a steady income, feeding their children, and escaping violence.
Investing in women is a proven path to reducing poverty. Decades of research have shown that when women have access to more resources, they invest in their families’ future by spending money on things like their children’s nutrition, education and health care. This creates a multiplier effect that strengthens families and communities over time. Increasing and protecting women’s financial means can also decrease their vulnerability to HIV/AIDS, violence, human trafficking and the impact of natural disasters.
After some thought, I decided to take on a dedicated fundraiser to raise small amount of money to put towards small projects or small assistance that essentially can take some burden away from the households. For example, when things are tight, the first person’s education to be sacrificed is the girls. Or another example, the men are doing nothing, the woman have no jobs and thus, if we could provide something as small as a sewing machine and a little bit of a start up, she can start earning money to feed her family.
Another example, Elodie and I met a family where the girl had a tumour in the back of her head and has been suffering terribly from migraines. The family has wasted so much money going back and forth to different hospitals, for advice, etc all telling them different things, all demanding bribes to get her in to an operation. We took her to a proper doctor who said he could sort it out for about £300. With support from Elodie's sister and ourselves, she is fine and now the mama can carry on saving money for education, feeding her family from her small vegetable business.
To date, thanks to the donations we have received we have managed to do the following:
51,400/- (Loice) Paid two terms of school fees for her to go to teacher training college
32,000/- (Claire). Paid her a salary for six months as a teacher. She has now gone to university
14100/- (Lydia). Paid her first term school fees
23,375/- (Mama Imani). Bought a cow for an elderly member of Imani Women's Group.
7,950/- (Bahati). Paid her first term school fees
5,000/- (sanitary pads). Bought loads of sanitary pads and donated them to Muhaka Schools. Girls can stay in school now!
28,375/- (water security – Imani). Earmarked for water security project at Imani Women's Group. Work to begin in March
30,000/- paid for a tumour to be removed from a six year old girls head
Total = 192,200/-
Total £1538
So little is going so far so thank for all you have done and do spread the word!
That’s the story and if you would like to contribute, it would be highly appreciated.
Many thanks for taking the time to hear another tragic African story but that’s just the way it is here and we can’t turn a blind eye to our motherland.
