For our summer "holiday" this year we are going to the Dominican Republic where we will be involved in a number of projects to help the poor. The main one is the building of homes for Haitian immigrants to lift them out of poverty and hopelessness. We are not builders(!) but can dig, mix cement, paint etc., to help the professionals. Realistically, the work we will do is a drop in the ocean but by going we hope that funds will follow us and make a difference. There is also some involvement with medical work, schools and families who live off the local rubbish dump.
Our aim is to raise £2200, which is the cost of land, materials and labour for 1 home. We are going with a group called Mission Direct, who channel UK volunteers and money into reputable and effective initiatives to help the poor in a number of countries. We have already paid for the trip, including the administration costs of Mission Direct, so that all money raised goes via Mission Direct to the local projects in the Dominican Republic.
