Story
Hi,
Many thanks for visiting my fundraising page. I am heading to Ethiopia at the start of August for a few weeks with a very small charity called Hanna’s Orphanage in conjunction with my college, Cass Business School.
Hanna’s Orphanage is a UK charity which was set up by a lady called Jenny Higgins to fundraise for ‘Hanna’s Orphans’ Home’ based Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. The orphanage is run by an Ethiopian lady; Hanna Teshome. The majority of the children have lost both parents to HIV and Aids, but some have living parents who are just too sick to care for them.
The idea for Hanna’s Orphanage was born during a trip to Ethiopia in October 2006, when Jenny visited the orphans’ home in Addis Ababa. At the end of her holiday, Jenny discovered she had some Ethiopian money (birr) left over and wanted to donate it to a local Ethiopian charity. She and a friend asked around and were soon taken to Hanna Orphans’ Home and ever since then Jenny has looked to raise funds and provide assistance to the home.
During my time there, I will be teaching English (at least attempting to!) in the mornings and running different activities during the afternoons and weekends. We will also be visiting a rural school run by a British NGO in Lalabella (North Ethiopia), where we will be helping out in in running a sports day (don’t think I’ll be taking on the locals in the 1500m!)
The college are kindly sponsoring all flights so every penny raised will be going directly to the charity and the children in Addis Ababa. I would greatly appreciate donations of any amount so don't be embarrassed about what you can offer! I would also be very grateful if you could try to direct anyone else you may know who would be interested in supporting this cause to this page. Obviously every pound raised goes a lot further out in Ethiopia so every little helps. Hanna’s Orphanage doesn’t incur many administrative costs as the few people who run it work on a voluntary basis.
I hope to be adding to the Hanna’s orphanage blog to let you know how everything is going and how the kids are getting on at http://hannasorphanage.blogspot.com/. There will also be a few fundraising events taking place in London over July so if you’re around it would be brilliant if you could come along.
Should you wish to donate to the charity, you can do so using the "donate now" button below via credit or debit card. Should you be a UK tax payer you can also get your revenge on George Osborne by ticking the relevant Gift aid box and Hanna’s Orphanage will receive an extra few bob from the UK government.
Anyhow, thanks a million for your time in reading the page. If you wish to know more about the charity or how your donation will be spent you can email me at donaloshea@hotmail.com or check out the charities website: http://www.hannasorphanage.org.uk .
Again, donations of any size are greatly appreciated,
Cheers,
Donal.
