Story

Trefor Davies our dog handler on Mull was often seen with his beloved collie dog, Drift, training and working on the island. They were also often together raising funds for SARDA (Southern Scotland) at the island's ferry ports.

Sadly Drift lost her battle against a short illness late last year.

This page is in memory of Drift a much loved family pet and working search dog.

A message from Trefor -

DRIFT       28/11/1996 - 03/12/2009

On Thursday afternoon we had to take Drift to the vet and have her put to sleep.
She had been unwell for the past 8 weeks and a visit to the vet 5 weeks ago revealed swollen Lymph Glands, and a course of steroids put the problem into a short remission.

On Wednesday afternoon she enjoyed an hour long walk with Cass and I and ate her dinner in the evening. She did not get out of bed on Thursday morning and by lunch time it appeared her whole system was closing down but she did not seem to be in pain.

Drift came from Argyll Animal Aid,one of 3 puppies a farmer did not want. It was as if she was destined to become a search dog from 12 months old accompanying me with Ross of Mull Coastguard on extensive searches for the 4 boys drowned in the Sound of Iona, Christmas 1997. Over the next 2 years there were further searches for missing fishermen off the coast of Mull and Gometra.

When she was 4 years old Calum got me involved with his Mull MRT and introduced us to SARDA. She enjoyed it all, the training, searches, trips to Crufts and fundraising. She also enjoyed going out training with Oban MRT and on one occasion the Oban Lifeboat for an exercise on Kerrera.

I have lost a fantastic friend and will miss her company especially SARDA training weekends.
