Story

Thank you for visiting our JustGiving page. Any donations will be hugely appreciated and will greatly benefit the community of Mikule.

This coming summer, EGP Malawi Kachimbeka (Amali Bunter, Emily Matthews, Tom Monaghan, Joel Akhurst, Poppy Nicholson, Mark Brownlee, and Rose Hartley) will be providing financial and physical assistance to a development project in the community of Mikule in Northern Malawi. We will be working with the local community-based organisation Kachimbeka to construct an apiculture centre (bee keeping for honey production) as an income generating initiative. Kachimbeka are a CBO that work to meet the developmental needs of the 347 farming families that comprise the Mikule community. The project was conceived as a lack of income seriously threatens the continuation of Kachimbeka’s work. Kachimbeka have identified certain community members who are in need of their support, and who will stand to benefit from the income generated by the apiculture centre. These are 47 orphans, 19 elderly, 7 disabled persons, 11 people living with HIV/AIDS and 80 of the poorest households in the community. The income generated will fund further development projects which will be decided upon by the community in an entirely democratic manner. As well as being used for bee keeping works, the centre will also be used to provide support and information to community members on sustainable environmental and agricultural practices. This will help improve food security in the area in the future.

As a group we are responsible for fundraising £8500 to pay for the construction of the apiculture centre. All of this money goes towards the direct costs of the project, paying for the building materials and the labourers’ wages. None of the money raised will be spent on volunteers’ personal travel and living expenses.

Donating through JustGiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to support us: Edinburgh Global Partnerships gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, JustGiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

So please sponsor us now!

Thank you very much for supporting EGP Malawi and the community of Mikule.
