ELofH in Sierra Leone · 27 May 2012

We provide life-changing support for children who have lost limbs through war, accidents, and lack of access to medical care. ELoH provides new limbs, surgery, education, and advocacy for the world's most vulnerable amputees. We believe all child amputees deserve to live a happy and healthy life.

Story

This Summer 2012, Elizabeth’s Legacy of Hope (ELofH) launched our third partnership with Street Child of Sierra Leone (SCoSL), to help 66 disadvantaged amputee children in Sierra Leone.

A team of nine ELofH supporters visited the project to see it in action in June.  Eight of the team also ran in Sierra Leone’s first ever marathon on 9th June to raise extra funds for the project.

Pollyanna Hope, along with her brother Barnaby, sister Sapphire, and their father Christopher, ran the 5 kilometre race.  Pollyanna, running with her prosthetic leg and crutches, did not stop for a single second along the way - determined to send a message of inspiration to other less fortunate amputee children in Sierra Leone.  She has shown them that, with the right support, their lives needn't be determined by their disabilities.  Elizabeth's Legacy of Hope's mission is to make this a reality.

Rebecca Newsom also ran the full marathon, and Sarah HopeKevin Craig and Ailsa Monro ran the half marathon distances in aid of this worthy cause.

Please dig deep to help us raise the stakes for some of the most vulnerable children in the world.

More about the project:

Street Child of Sierra Leone (SCoSL) will work closely with its partners on the ground, Handicap International (HI) and Action for the Rights of Children (ARC), to use ELofH’s funds to:

·      Provide prosthetic fittings and repairs for the 60 beneficiaries

·      Facilitate counseling and rights education sessions to help address the psychosocial needs of the beneficiaries

·      Aid the integration of limbless children in their schools and communities through regular disability awareness-raising activities

·      Train staff in identifying, and providing effective community-based support for amputee children

ELofH and SCoSL view this as the first year of a long-term partnership to significantly tackle child limb loss and the causes and impacts of life on the streets for hundreds of children in Sierra Leone.

Every donation to this JustGiving page will go directly towards ELofH and SCoSL's project in Sierra Leone - enabling us to help even more children.

Thank you so much for your support!
