My name is Erin, my daughter Cassia was diagnosed in April with severe plagiocephaly and commenced non-invasive helmet treatment for 4 months to correct the deformity.
Plagiocephaly is a partial flattening of the back of the head that gives a distorted look to the head shape and can cause a misalignment of the ears and eyes.
In severe cases it may contribute to jaw and dental problems in later life and the negative psychological effects of teasing and bullying in the child's formative years.
Helmet Treatment
Generally available for babies aged between four and 24 months, with around 80% of cranial growth occurring in the first 12 months of a baby's life, treatment is most effective within that time.
The helmet fits snugly to the unaffected area and leaves space around the flat spot so that any growth is channelled into the area which needs to 'round out'.
Treatment is not available on the NHS and costs up to £2500
Headstart4Babies is a charity which we used as a guide and support when making the difficult decision to put our daughter into a corrective helmet for 23 hours per day.
Headstart4babies - Raises awareness of plagiocephaly and its associated conditions.
- Provides help and advice to worried parents.
- Assists families on low incomes to proceed with treatment.
We are running the Leicester Half Marathon on 11th October to raise money for Headstart4Babies. Some of the money raised will go towards Cassia's treatment and we hope to raise enough to help someone else too.
