LEJOG (Land’s End to John O’Groats)
became
LESH (Land’s End to Shrewsbury)
Saturday 26 May
Arrived in Penzance to torrential rain. Went right away to Land’s End to have my photo taken. Thunder and lightning now in attendance. Cycled through this weather 5 miles to Land’s End Youth Hostel to spend the night. Had felt a mildly sore throat/ears on way down, but took painkillers and all seemed well.
Day 1
Sunday 27 May
A very hilly 105 miles (a wee bit more than Paisley to Carlisle) from Land’s End to Okehampton. Feeling OK, ears/throat seemed not to getting worse.
Day 2
Monday 28 May
Okehampton to Bristol, another 105 miles. First 20 miles were fine, then the remaining 85 miles were hilly again. Ears throat much the same.
Day 3
Tuesday 29 May
Now really feeling the sore throat/ears, hacking cough, heavy cold. No energy. I was cycling a couple of miles, then resting over the handlebars, then repeating the process. At one point I found a nice grass verge in Tewkesbury, lay down, fell asleep, but woke up a few minutes later with insects crawling over me. So, my good luck continued. Got as far as Worcester, a mere 60 miles.
Day 4
Wednesday 30 May
More good luck. Leaving my B&B and fairly fast downhill, my back wheel locked. My spare cycling undershorts, washed the night before, had fallen off of my saddlebag where they’d been drying, and wrapped themselves around the backwheel. Full of holes they were. Just 65 miles today. Feeling worse. Same cycling: a couple of miles, then resting a minute or two. Could only make it as far as Shresbury, where I decided to call it a day.
The cycling was easy enough, so it was upsetting to pack it in. I’ll return to do LEJOG, but not for a charity. I’ll never risk a charity trip again.
On 26 May this year, I'll set off for Land's End. The next morning I'll set off on my velocipede for John O'Groats. I have allowed for 10 days, but hope to do it in less. I'm raising money for Hope & Kindness http://www.hopeandkindness.org/, a very worthy cause which really does show God's love in a practical way for those most in need.
