I am taking part in a 33 mile cycle from Omagh to Derry on the 14 August 2011 which has been organised by my work colleagues and myself at Claremount Chartered Accountants in aid of the prettynpink breast cancer charity
Pretty n Pink is the only registered Breast Cancer charity in Northern Ireland. It is run by a very small team of people including a breast cancer survivor and local volunteers from across the province. All the funds raised go directly back to Breast Cancer patients and their families in Northern Ireland
The reason for choosing this charity is because it will make life a little bit easier for the patient and their familes now at the time when it is most needed.
From my personal experience I have met quite a few patients some who are unfortunately no longer with us and some that I still remain in contact with. When I was reading into the background of the prettynpink charity one lady who I met during my chemo at Altnagelvin quickly came to mind.
She was a wee lady in her mid 70's and she had travelled to the hospital on her own on the bus. She had got her first bus to the depot in Derry and then another one over to the hospital. She had been up since 5.30am to be in Derry to be seen by the oncologist at 9.00am. I was never home from treatment any earlier than 4.30pm so I expect by the time the lady had caught her two buses it was alot later and was alot more tired than me.
The prettynpink charity aims to provide help to such patients like the lady who perhaps did not have the money to pay for another means of other transport.
