OTAKAR KRAUS MUSIC TRUST LIBRETTO

June 2011

A SPECIAL EDITION OF LIBRETTO FOR A VERY PARTICULAR CAUSE

Edison Carolino has been a much loved and respected music therapist at Otakar Kraus Music Trust for many years.  He has helped an untold amount of children find a better quality of life through the power of music.  He has also developed ground breaking projects which allow children find their potential both in his native Brazil and here in England.  The highly successful and rewarding Music Club was his brainchild.

Edison has now taken Music Club a stage further with a new project – musicOK.  Otakar Kraus Music Trust is piloting a project at the Marjory Kinnon School giving special needs children a wonderful chance to explore their musical abilities. The result has been excellent, exceeding all of our hopes.  Students have demonstrated a keen desire to develop their musical talents building up their self-confidence, their communication skills and their ability to interact with others.  We now have a choir consisting of 28 students as well as providing singing lessons and classes for xylophone, recorder, percussion and keyboard.  In fact, since we began only three months ago, we have already performed successfully three times, with more than 30 students having been given the opportunity to perform in an exciting musical event. We now have a waiting list of more than 40 students also keen to participate.

Funding for this pilot group is now coming to an end and the OKMT is now looking for different ways in which it can raise funds to allow this very unique and valuable project to continue.  OKMT’s Director of Marketing, Susan Hamilton, has been looking at the different ways to secure funding which would allow musicOK to continue.  Funding applications are being made, but it was Edison who came up with an idea to help raise as much of the money needed as possible.

To help win your support, he is putting it all on line!!

READ ON TO FIND OUT WHAT EDISON PLANS TO DO…

On 26 June, Edison will be jumping out of a plane at 15,000 feet (with a parachute, naturally!)  - with the aim of raising money to continue with the marvelous work that has been started and which still has so far to go.

“Personally I think this is total madness,” says Susan Hamilton.  “The work of the Trust is absolutely awe-inspiring, but to jump out of a plane to support such rewarding work puts a whole new meaning to the expression ‘going the extra mile’.  So I have to go to the source to ask Edison how and why he is going to undertake such a generous activity.  The following is his response.”

“I have always wanted to try skydiving but I never had the nerve before. However, the possibility of our project ending has let me find the courage within myself to “take the plunge”, so to speak. I am, if truth be told, a little scared, because I can’t imagine what the sensation will be like to jump out of a plane and pray that the parachute opens- but my fear fades away when I think of how much our students will miss out if our project is forced to end.

“I know this is for a great cause. I am confident that if we are able to continue with our work with the children, we will be giving them the opportunity to shine on the stages of theatres, schools and most important throughout their future lives.

“I DO HOPE YOU WILL SUPPORT ME.  I AM TAKING TO THE SKIES SO LET ALL OF US MAKE THE SKY THE LIMIT IN DONATING TO musicOK.”
