The charities are

Barnsley Cancer relief

Barnsley Cancer Relief provides small cash grants to cancer sufferers in Barnsley mostly to help with expenses of the patient’s illness. A typical grant will be for taxis to Weston Park Hospital for chemotherapy appointments for someone who finds the treatment makes them unwell on public transport or to buy new clothes for someone who has suddenly lost weight. Grants are rarely more than £400, and usually far less, but they make a huge difference to the, often very disadvantaged, people who receive them.

Helen’s Trust

For some people who are dying, home is the place they want to be most. But because they simply haven’t got the equipment or care that is needed, they have to remain in hospital, isolated and alone. Helen’s Trust exists to change that. They endeavour to provide whatever is needed for anyone with any incurable illness to have the choice to die in their own home, surrounded by those they love most. The type of support they provide is for nursing care, sitters, help to run the house, support of others living in the home or equipment. It’s often the really simple things that can make a huge difference.

Shield

Shield’s aim is to encourage and support people living with HIV and Aids to improve their quality of life, feel empowered and manage their health. The support services offer one to one and social groups to people suffering from the illness, their friends and family. Shield feels it important to support the loved ones of clients as they too must come to terms with the illness. The second strand of their work is their Education Programme which involves people living with HIV, either themselves or family members visiting schools as part of the PHSE Curriculum to deliver talks on their own experiences of living with HIV in South Yorkshire.
