Story

Just £1 of the money you spend this Christmas could make a huge difference to the thousands of chicks forced into a life Inside the Turkey Shed.

My story is as simple as urging people to support the plea for  COMPASSION in World Farming this Christmas. At least take a moment to read my story before you decide...

Aged as young as 9 weeks old, intensively reared Turkey chicks spend their lives trapped Inside the Turkey Shed.

As these thousands of chicks Inside the Turkey Shed are 'fattened up' the amount of space they have is limited so much that they can barely change position. Because of this, chicks can't avoid heat, cold or dirt.

Inside the Turkey Shed, as the amount of space for each chick decreases, the amount of faeces on the floor increases, giving off a terrible ammonia which causes painful breast sores & blisters and eye & respiratory problems.

Of course all this stress & discomfort can cause agression amonst the panicked chicks Inside the Turkey Shed, so it's common for turkeys to have had part of their beaks cut off without anaesthetic.

Inside the Turkey Shed, when being caught & crated for transportation to slaughter houses, the chicks often suffer broken legs & wings from rough-handling.

Inside the Slaughter House is the most 'shocking' place of all...

The turkey chicks are hung upside down - each one for up to 3 minutes - before being dipped into an electric bath which stuns them for the throat slitting process. The chicks panic means their wings may hit the water first - delivering painful pre-stun electric shocks.

Some of the turkey chicks regain consciousness before their throats are slit.

If the main artery is not severed properly some of the chicks are conscious when plunged into the scalding tank.

Compassion In World Farming tell us how:

"In the winter, turkeys are often killed in smaller ‘seasonal’ slaughterhouses or on-farm. This is sometimes done by dislocation, possibly carried out by untrained staff and without pre-stunning. In some instances, they may have their throats cut without pre-stunning. This is illegal in the EU.

Turkeys are sometimes plucked within seconds of neck dislocation when they may still be alive and conscious."

There are always alternative methods of  rearing and slaughter that cause less suffering. Compassion In World Farming campaigns peacefully to end all cruel factory farming practices & actively seeks global reform for billions of farm animals suffering around the world.
