Every week a family in the UK hears the devastating words ‘your child has a rare cancer’. For families facing a diagnosis of retinoblastoma, life changes in an instant. At CHECT, we offer lifelong emotional support, practical advice, and grants to support anyone affected by retinoblastoma.

Story

Thank you for visiting my page. I expect all of you reading this already know my family’s story but if you wanted a reminder of why it is still important to donate to the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (CHECT), read on.

My son Euan has just turned two. For over a year we have had to fly down to Birmingham once a month to get specialist care at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital for the childhood cancer Retinoblastoma. During these visits he has to endure a general anaesthetic delivered by gas and laser and other local treatment on the eye. Last year he had 6 rounds of chemotherapy and in the beginning of May 2011 he will have his first radioactive plaque fitted to his eye. On-going treatment is likely to last a few more years.

Retinoblastoma is a long haul for the children suffering from it and their families. CHECT supports families like ours and researches the causes and effects of Rb.

On Sunday 8 May I completed the Glasgow women’s 10K for CHECT in 1hr 24 minutes. It has been a huge personal challenge for me with training interspersed with work, hospital visits and general family life, but great feeling to have completed it (despite the rain!) and I am etternally grateful to everyone for such amazing support. All your contributions are gratefully received.

We are still fundraising, as Euan's auntie Lorna is running the Manchester 10k on Sunday 15 May. Please give whatever you can no matter how small.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Thank you SO much

Ellen x
