This is an urgent appeal for donations to raise the remainder of a fundraising target set in Ramadan/September 2007 to fund treatment costs for a young Libyan school teacher called Embaraka. In 2007, Embaraka needed an urgent stem cell transplant and crucial cancer drugs to survive a crisis (blast) stage of chronic myeloid leukaemia, a type of blood cancer.As a result of generous donations made in Ramadan 2007 appeal, we raised almost 60% of the total £150, 000 pounds needed for her treatment at the in . However, Embaraka’s struggle to live is not yet over and I am now returning to appeal for your help to collect the remaining £75, 000 to cover her continued treatment costs.
Embaraka has been taking powerful immunosuppressive drugs over the past year to control a condition called graft versus host disease, which is where some of the donor’s active immune cells recognise the recipient (Embaraka’s) cells as foreign and attack them. Unfortunately the immune suppressing treatment means she is more vulnerable to infections and not surprisingly, a fungal infection of the lungs has finally caught up with her. This requires urgent, expensive and long term anti-fungal treatment. Unfortunately, Muslim Global Relief the charity who established an exclusive fund raising account for her, now report that her account has run out of money and can only afford to pay for at most one last batch of anti-fungal drugs.
With God’s continued mercy, your prayers and generosity and Embaraka’s strong struggle to live, she has time and again managed to overcome the worst case scenarios and beaten her cancer not just once but twice. Embaraka is not a victim, she is a survivor. In the past year, whilst battling with her ill health she has tried her best to put something back into the local community by volunteering to teach young children Qur’an and Arabic studies.
