We fund research and provide support to improve blood cancer patients' lives

Story

In January our Mum, Annette Macaluso was diagnosed with an aggresive form of AML. My sisters and I decided we wanted to fundraise for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research and chose the British 10k in London to be our first fundraising event. We managed to rope in some friends to join us on our mission and named ourselves as "Team MAC"!

A 10k run was a challenge in itself as we aren't "runners"!  We were also prioritising our time to visit mum over training leading up to the event. Mum was responding well to treatment and had two bone marrow matches in her brother and sister. We all had hope that she would have a successful transplant and may be able to watch us take part in the 10k. However on 14th May 2013 a routine blood test showed that the AML had returned with the devastating news that it was terminal. We spent every day together as a family until we lost Mum on the 6th June 2013.

The British 10k was fast approaching and we were all determined to continue with our training so we could all take part and raise as much money as possible for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research. We set up our just giving pages as well as Text to Donate and started sharing it with all of our family, friends and colleagues. Seeing the donations come in spurred us on with our training through a difficult month and was a great help and inspiration to us all. On the 14th July 2013 Team MAC took part in the British 10k. It was a sweltering hot 32 degrees but with the help of the crowd shouting our names, our Dad, Family and Friends, the London sites and lots of water fights we all made it across the finish line raising over £1800 so far with more donations yet to come in.

This is only the start of the fundraising journey for Team Mac with 3 of us taking part in Run to the Beat Half Marathon in September 2013, a Quiz Night planned and a 150 strong Rock Choir Concert in Marylebone, London on the 30th November 2013 with an expected 500 guests.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us.

Amy, Emily & Carla Macaluso

In January 2013 our Mum , Annette Macaluso was taken ill and diagnosed with Acute Myloid Leukaemia. She was rushed to St Barts Hospital where she has been receiving excellent treatment and Care since being admitted.

Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research is the only UK charity dedicated to finding better treatments and cures for all blood cancers, including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

Most of the patients are bravely taking part in medical research studies whilst having their treatment to help others in the future.

We have decided to run the British 10K and do our bit to help Leukaemia and lymphoma Research. Please if you can, give any amount big or small, as it will help make a difference to us, my mum, the rest of our family and everyone else who now or in the future may be affected by Blood Cancer.

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
