For those of you who don't know me. I was diagnosed with a complete molar pregnancy following my 12 week scan. It was something I had never heard of or knew anything about. It is a rare complication, for every 1,000 live births registered in the UK only one molar pregnancy is registered. Sadly this meant that my pregnancy would no longer continue. I was placed under the care of Charing Cross Hospital in London who are the world experts in this field. I began a follow up programme where hCG levels are monitored as there is a risk of the molar tissue persisting, growing and spreading. Unfortunately, I was one of the 10% of women who develop Gestational Trophoblastic Disease (GTD). I was admitted to Charing Cross Hospital last April to commence chemotherapy. I continued with my treatment until the end of July when my hCG levels returned to normal.
I am now 7 months clear and feel it's time to give something back as a thank you for the outstanding care that I received. GTD takes a huge physical and emotional toll on those that it effects. Not only do you have to deal with the loss of a pregnancy, but you also have to face up to the frightening reality of getting chemotherapy. The staff at Charing Cross Hospital are some of the few people who understand the complexities of the condition, and provide amazing support and care for patients.
My husband Gareth, myself and some of our fantastic friends are taking part in the relay section of the Belfast Mararthon on May 2nd, on behalf of the Cancer Treatment and Research Trust. GTD is a rare condition and very little is understood about what actually causes it. The Trust is in constant need of funds to keep up the vital work that they are doing.
