Medical Detection Dogs trains dogs to detect the odour of disease. Our research includes cancer, Parkinson's and other diseases and could save millions of lives by improving diagnostics. We already help people manage complex, life-threatening medical conditions by training Medical Alert Dogs.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

My name is Emily (Emmie) Wallace I have been a brittle type one diabetic for 22 years (since age 4) and over this time it has been very hard to stablise my diabetes. I have always had swinging blood sugar levels from fits post exercise as a child or close to comas from ketoacidosis from infections.

Last year i got a food poisioning , which made my diabetes very unpredictable and i had two fits when my blood sugars dropped dangerously low and my mum had to call a ambulance I was then admitted into hospital and found out i had lost my hypo awareness (symptoms of my blood sugar levels dropping) which was and has been hugely worrying for myself and my family. I was then put onto a insulin pump instead of injections to help control my diabetes. My diabetes has improved but i still dont have hypo awareness.

My mum came across the a webpage called www.hypoalertdogs.co.uk and it is a charity where they train dogs to detect when a diabetic's sugar levels are dropping or rising outside the ideal perameters. The dogs are able to do this because when a person is unwell they produce a odour, which the dogs can smell and they are trained to react to that odour. I have now applied for a hypo alert dog because this will make a HUGE difference to mine and in particular my mother's life. Having a hypo alert dog will be  greatly reassuring as the dog will alert me to my diabetes changing, so keep your fingers crossed for me :-)

The charity also trains dogs to detect cancer in urine samples and the dogs are very successful in sniffing out the correct sample. www.cancerdogs.co.uk

I feel that this charities work is amazing and can make a big difference to people's life. I am going to do a 2 hour snowboarding session at my local dry slope to raise money for the charity. I have only learnt to snowboard in the last few weeks so this is still going to be a challenge! Plus i will do it with a tail and doggie ears and face paint!

Thank you for your time to read my story and hopefully you'll be so kind to donate to this charity
