Story

Message from Sally-Anne Hunter, Founder and Director of Commando Spirit.

Ewan was a huge supporter of the Commando Spirit Appeal for the Royal Marines Charity and his wife, Marie, has asked if we can open his JustGiving page to collect donations in his memory.

He took part in all of the Survive The Yomp events and the Take The Leap in Glasgow, each time raising far more than his target but as importantly brought friendship to all he met, a smile and a sense that everything is possible no matter what to every single moment I had the pleasure to know him.

It is a comfort that he died doing what he loved, riding his motorbike and amongst friends. The world is a sad place without him but a richer place for him having been in it. We will miss you. RIP.

The below is Ewan's original copy for his 2015 page:

To show my support for the Royal Marines, I will be taking part in not one, but two, Commando Spirit Series Challenges. Both Survive The Yomp for the third year in a row, and also Take The Leap.

Survive TheYomp is no walk in the park. Set in the stunning Scottish Highlands around historic Achnacarry Castle, this is a 30-mile hike across rugged and remote terrain; they don’t call it ‘Commando Country’ for nothing.

You can see more of what I will be facing by watching the highlights of last year's Survive TheYomp here:

Part of theCommando Spirit Series of fundraising challenge events “Survive The Yomp” and "Take The Leap" mirrors the training exercises normally only experienced by Royal MarinesCommandos.

Take The Leapis no ordinary abseil and I will be abseiling off the very top of the iconic150ft high Titan Crane in Glasgow with the Royal Marines!

You can see more of what I will be facing by watching the highlights of the last Take The Leap at Twickenham Stadium here:

On 4th October 2015 I am determined to be one of those that Take The Leap, and on the 12th of September 2015 I am determined to be one of those who Survive The Yomp – more importantly and with your help I intend to show true grit and determination to raise significant funds for Royal Marines and their families in need.

They risk their all for us – will you show your support and sponsor me today? Thank you.

Where do the funds go?

Commando Spirit’s Survive The Yomp and Take The Leap are raising funds for the work of the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund.

The Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund has probably the widest purposes of almost any Service charity – helping the wounded and injured; providing support for those still serving by funding decompression activities, homecoming events and memorials; providing through-life support to those who have left the Corps or have lost loved ones. Quite simply, the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund will help when others cannot.

What is the Commando Spirit Series?

The Commando Spirit Series of events offers once-in-a-lifetime experiences to test your mettle and gain a rare and privileged insight into what it means to be a Royal Marines Commando today. The events will pit participants against some of the most formidable aspects of the Commando training and stretch them to achieve their fundraising commitments. Participants will be supported by our Royal Marines who will provide motivation and encouragement when the going gets tough. If you have what it takes - you can do this and if you would like to pleasecontact me or email info@commandospirit.com

What is Survive The Yomp?

Survive The Yomp, will see brave participants take on the ultimate final test faced by every Royal Marine in order to complete their training – The 30 miler.

SurviveThe Yomp, an arduous 30 mile hike across tough terrain in the Scottish Highlands, carrying full commando kit or survival kit, emulates the final test faced by every Royal Marine recruit in order to be awarded the coveted green beret. Commando Spirit participants will be tested to the edge of their limitations as they take on this most arduous of challenges. Survive The Yomp offers participants a unique opportunity to experience first hand the Commando qualities required of one of the world's most elite forces in the iconic and arduous terrain around Achnacarry, Scotland - the original "Commando Country" where Commandos have trained since World War II.

What is Take The Leap?

Take the Leap is a series of abseils offered by Commando Spirit that give civilian participants the chance to take on Royal Marines fast rope abseiltraining – and put their new skill into practice by abseiling from iconic locations. To date the Take The Leap series has included the roof of the listed St Pancras station, Twickenham rugby ground, The Shard and Titan Crane inGlasgow.
