RNLI volunteer lifeboat crews provide a 24-hour search and rescue service all around the UK and Ireland, while lifeguards keep a careful watch on the UK’s busiest beaches. RNLI lifesaving and drowning prevention depend on supporter fundraising and the generous donations that you and others give.

Story

FASTNET 993 is a Team taking part in the 2007 Cannonball Run Europe in aid of the RNLI.

The name; Fastnet is a famous yacht race, held every other year from Southampton to Plymouth via the Fastnet Rock off Southern Ireland.  In 1979 this race saw a terrible storm and many perished despite the heroic efforts of the volunteers of the RNLI, 993 is the model name of the Porsche 911 that will carry us across Europe.  The Cannonball Run starts from London on Sunday 1st July.

The RNLI is very personal to me both through my passion for sailing, but also through the commercial shipping involved in my profession.  On the worst of days the RNLI are the crew going out, when all other crews head for home or stay in port.  They are the crew you hope never to have to call on, but are the guys that help our fisherman, our merchant navy, the child out of his depth on a beach or the passenger on a ferry that is going down!

Since the RNLI was founded in 1824, its lifeboats have saved more than 137,000 lives. Volunteer crew members come from all walks of life and readily exchange leisure, comfort and sleep for cold, wet and fatigue. Their lifesaving work is essential, often difficult and sometimes dangerous.

Lifeboat crews are mostly volunteers, who come from all walks of life, and give up their time and comfort to carry out rescues and save lives at sea on the lifeboats.

The RNLI receives no government funding and is entirely supported by public donations
