At FORCE Cancer Charity we believe that anyone diagnosed with cancer deserves the best possible treatment and professional support, face to face and close to home. We have a Cancer Support and Information Centre in Exeter for patients and their loved ones.

Story

A team of 6 will be taking on Kilimanjaro for FORCE Cancer Charity in September 2010.

Sarah Willocks             Fundraising Manager for the Charity

Maggie Shepherd          Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the PMS / Senior Research Fellow at the RD&E

Tim McDonald               Senior Biochemist at the RD&E

Sarah Flanagan             Post-Doctoral research fellow at the PMS

Jan Smith                     PA to the Dean at the Peninsula Medical School

Sian Ellard                    Head of the Molecular Genetics Laboratory at the RD&E

Four of the group discovered the delights of a charity challenge trek in Peru three years ago and decided that the challenge of raising funds to support a local cause far outweighed the long days walking, cold nights camping, altitude sickness and fatigue experienced on the trek!

We have decided that the ultimate Challenge for us will be to take on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa. Climbing to an altitude of 5896m (19,341ft) over 7 days; walking through the dusty African plains through the thick forest and up on to the moorland before rising to the spectacular views and ice formations of the glaciers as we reach the highest point of the crater, Uhuru Peak.

We have been assured our limits will be tested, both physically and mentally – but the rewards will be worth it. Not only a personal challenge for each of us, but also a group decision and commitment to raise funds to support our local Cancer Charity – FORCE. The charity needs to raise in excess of £750,000 a year to run a Cancer Support Centre in Exeter; to fund two research studentships at the Peninsula Medical School and to fund essential equipment for the Oncology Department at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.

Please support us in supporting others who will benefit from our fundraising endeavours. Any amount you can give you will be gratefully received, and more importantly by the Charity and its beneficiaries.
