Story

We, the London Greek community, want to help our compatriots who are suffering back home. Let’s support Doctors of the World in Greece, a charity that’s doing an incredible job out there.

Greece is the mother of the Olympics. At this time, we are remembering our fellow Greeks in need.

Now, a staggering 80% of the people Doctors of the World help are Greek.

Many of these beneficiaries are elderly citizens who are retired and whose pensions have substantially diminished due to financial austerity measures.

Lately, the clinic has been overwhelmed with vaccination requests for Greek children whose parents can’t afford their booster shots – something the agency as only ever seen in the developing world.

The President of Doctors of the World in Greece says: “The numbers are shocking – around 20% of Greeks are living a desperate existence. The number of Greeks seeking survival at community kitchens has quadrupled; the number of homeless has tripled. We are talking about the start of a humanitarian crisis.”

Please donate here to Doctors of the World, Greece. Any contribution, no matter how small, will be gratefully received.

Doctors of the World has been providing free medical services via Open Polyclinics across Greece - including in Athens, Thessaloniki, Chania and Perama - for 15 years.

Originally, Doctors of the World were in Greece to help migrants. In early 2010 only 7% of the beneficiaries were of Greek origin. Then as the economic crisis bit, the proportion of Greeks reached 30% in 2011.

Now, a staggering 80% of the people Doctors of the World help are Greek.
