Story
Right, so the cold has well and truly hit us. Just in time for the Sponsored Sleepout. But more importantly, this also signifies worsening conditions for the homeless.
So inshAllah on Friday 22nd November, I will be sleeping out (i.e. the whole night under the open skies), with the aim to raise money for an amazing charity (St. Mungos) which rebuilds the lives of the homeless and helps get people off the streets. You can read about their work here.
Homelessness is a real issue in the society that we live in today and government statistics state that in London alone, 6,437 people slept rough throughout 2012/13 - a 62 per cent rise in just two years!
Those of us participating have the knowledge that we can indeed inshAllah return in the morning to a warm house and bed - those on the streets don't have this luxury - or anything close to it. With the coldest winter since 1947 predicted, we need to come together to help the homeless.
I can’t lie - I'm really worried - those who know me well know I don’t 'do' cold – at all! So this is going to be a severe challenge but one I hope to come away from with a renewed appreciation for the plight of the homeless and a revitalised appreciation of the blessings we take for granted.
So please donate whatever you can. Thank you!
This event is organised by WhoIsHussain.org and begins with a shared meal with the homeless at SOAS to hear their story (note - not a Soup Run).
Homelessness is an issue that affects us all and we hope we can make a difference and raise awareness of this growing issue.
