JUST GIVING

Tour De Herrick 2014

Salem Ali Kom... For those of you not well versed in Pashtu this is how we say "hello" in Afghanistan where we, members of The Royal Air Force, 2 Tactical Police Squadron (2TPS) are currently serving at Camp Bastion.

As part of our role we at the Main Entry Point (MEP) process local Afghanistan workers daily into the Bastion / Leatherneck complex and since our arrival in April have built a good rapport with these people who, through no fault of their own now live in a country devastated by war. It is a genuine concern of ours what will happen to those most effected once our deployment finishes and Operation Herrick comes to an end.

As such 'Team MEP' made up of 2TPS, British Army and our US Marine Corp Colleagues propose to take on the "Tour De Herrick" to raise money for the charity War Child (www.warchild.org.uk) which primarily gives aid to Afghanistan Children who are now living in one of the most dangerous places in the world.

The challenge will start on the same day as this years Tour De France. Taking place from Saturday 5th July to Sunday 27th July 2014 the 101st Tour De France is made up of 21 stages and covers a total distance of 3,656 kilometres. Team MEP's aim is to emulate this prestigious event with a different rider completing the distance of each stage. We will use a static bike located at the MEP and will update regularly on here.

This is by no means an easy feat as most days will see each rider completing in excess of 160 kilometres; the furthest distance being 237.5 kilometres. In essence we expect to be on the bike for 12 hours or more!!

Two words people..
'SADDLE SORE'!! Ouch!!

We are all of different abilities but, have one purpose - to complete each stage and raise as much money as we can whilst keeping operations running smoothly.

Whilst actively serving out here this is something we are excited to get involved with. Not only will it give us focus and create a real team spirit but most importantly it is a really worthwhile charity to get involved with and help those less fortunate than ourselves.

Thank you for your time. We appreciate any support you can give us :))
