We support people with disabilities to live their lives with no limits.

Story

My name is Fintan Cooney and this is my nine year old daughter Rachel. Rachel has Cerebral Palsy. While she is intellectually normal, her physical disability is severe. She cannot walk, talk or even sit unaided and she is fully dependent on others for every aspect of her care. She communicates and learns with an eye gaze computer. Rachel attends Enable Ireland Sandymount School. Like most of her fellow pupils, Rachel loves to swim in the Enable Ireland Sandymount Hydrotherapy pool.  Hydrotherapy pools are different to swimming pools in that the temperature is maintained at a very warm 34-36 degrees Celsius. This allows those with physical disabilities to receive physiotherapy in an environment similar to a very warm bath. The warm water allows muscles to be moved more easily and physiotherapy in this environment is highly effective. Also, having users suspended in water, allows them to use their bodies in ways not possible if in a wheelchair or on the ground.  Being able to move independently and freely while suspended in water can be enormously liberating for people who normally have greatly restricted movement, elevating mood and opening their minds to their abilities. However the hydrotherapy pool is now a number of years old, and the facilities are much in need of updating.  The changing areas need to be expanded and refurbished, and the pool side and reception areas require modernisation and upgrading to ensure improved access for all.Of course, all of this will cost money. I think this is a very worthwhile cause so I've decided to raise €50,000 towards this cost and I hope that you'll help me. In September I cycled 750 kms from Paris to Nice to help raise this money. Any donation will be greatly appreciated. Please note I covered all of my own costs for this trip, so every cent you donate goes directly to this very deserving cause.
